Sniffin’ Sticks On-Paper

In order to avoid nose contact of the Sniffin’ Sticks in a self-administered setting with narrow personnel resources, it has previously been tested if the 16-odor identification test can be “painted” on a sheet of paper. No significant differences were observed between the results of standard-assisted and “odor-curves-on-paper” method (1). In a recent update, the method was also deemed applicable for odor discrimination testing (2). There were restrictions for threshold testing, mainly because, due to the lack of an assistant, a different test method had to be applied. It remains to be determined if an assisted threshold testing can be performed on a paper.
In the current COVID-19 pandemic this method may be used in an assisted setting to avoid contamination of the Sniffin’ Sticks.
Burghart Messtechnik will soon offer cellulose paper strips for odor transfer. Sniffin’ Sticks are sufficient for at least 1000 test strips, but the expiration date may be shortened.

Update Sniffin' Sticks & COVID-19!

In a study by the University of Freiburg, Burghart Sniffin’s Sticks (Screening 12) (https://1485253724.jimdo.com/englisch/standard-tests/) were used to study anosmia / hyposmia. 84% of COVID-19 patients had anosmia or hyposmia, of which only 47% indicated a subjective reduction in smell. The study indicates that "Anosmia and Hyposmia often occur unnoticed in COVID-19 patients, and that for those patients an objective and quantifiable test is required”.

Sniffin' Sticks for early detection of COVID-19!

New studies suggest that acute loss of smell often occurs in patients with COVID-19 (e.g. 1). Impaired ability to smell is one of the most common symptoms (77%) in the first four days of infection (2). In combination with dry cough, determining loss of smell could aid in early diagnosis of COVID-19 (3). Loss of smell and taste are more specific for COVID-19 than e.g. cough or fever (4). In an emergency department in Korea it was determined that self-reported normosmia predicted that a patient did not have COVID-19 with 96% probability. An objective smell test may further improve this prediction (5). Burghart Messtechnik GmbH offers e.g. the validated Screening 12 test, which can be used to reliably detect an odor loss.
